Over 500 learners have taken courses in SWSIE Sustainable Workforce Development Training.

The NSF Engines: Southwest Sustainability Innovation Engine (SWSIE), led by Arizona State University, is proud to share that over 500 learners have taken courses in SWSIE Sustainable Workforce Development Training. This milestone reflects a growing commitment to sustainability across Arizona, Nevada, and Utah.

About the Southwest Sustainability Innovation Engine (SWSIE)

Powered by a $15 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), SWSIE equips organizations and communities with tools to tackle pressing environmental challenges such as water security, renewable energy and carbon reduction. 

Featured courses

The SWSIE Education Hub offers a powerful way for organizations and individuals to contribute to regional sustainability. We offer a diverse range of programs tailored to various aspects of sustainability and climate education. 

Some highlights include:

Courses cover essential topics like ESG Reporting, Sustainability Challenges for the Planet and Employers, and Supply Chain and Sustainable Materials—all designed to equip employees with the skills necessary for solving some of the region’s most pressing climate challenges. The most popular course, Urban Climate: Keeping Cities Livable with Climate Research, taught participants about urban climate research, covering critical topics that link urban environments to energy consumption, water usage, air quality, and public health. Courses are free for SWSIE partners, easily accessible online and designed to meet the evolving demands of business.  

SWSIE Sustainable Workforce Challenge

Launched in October 2024, the SWSIE Sustainable Workforce Challenge promotes sustainability education and workforce development. By participating, organizations can educate their workforce on sustainable practices and position themselves as leaders in this movement. ASU will recognize organizations with the highest number of course completions with SWSIE Sustainable Workforce Awards.

The deadline for participation was recently extended to January 31, 2025, giving even more learners the opportunity to join this transformative initiative.

Achieving 500 is an exciting step toward a more sustainable Southwest, but the journey continues. SWSIE aims to educate 6,000 learners by December 2025, further embedding sustainable practices across the region.
